Police officer who lost both hands while throwing teargas canisters may need artificial arms

A medical assessment states that a police officer who lost both hands when a tear gas canister burst in his hands would require prosthetic arms.

This came after, on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, a tear gas canister exploded in his hands before he could shoot demonstrators opposing the Finance Bill in Nairobi’s Central Business District.

Chief Inspector David Maina detonated a tear gas canister during the protest, but he held off on discharging it, which caused it to explode and seriously hurt both of his hands, according to the police report. He thus lost both of his forearms in the event.

His female coworker, who was standing close by, suffered severe injuries to her chest. They were sent swiftly to Nairobi West Hospital, where Maina had emergency surgery.
